Literary Analysis of Macbeth Having a lust for power can cause a loss in many things. Itââ¬â¢s as if youââ¬â¢re in a win-lose situation. In this case, the play Macbeth written by Shakespeare has scholars sayings, ââ¬Å"The lust for power by Macbeth and Lady Macbeth led to a loss of humanity. â⬠With that said, I totally agree with their view. Both Lady Macbeth and Macbeth went out of their way to even killing King Duncan and burdening the murder on his guardsmen. Even though thatââ¬â¢s a common human act, you just donââ¬â¢t do something like that. Itââ¬â¢s just so wrong. The acts of both these people are very evil and violent, in which causes Macbeth to move from one act of endangerment to another just to protect himself from a great disaster which I likely consider his death to be it. Lady Macbeth is like a tag along buddy. She is like a huge helping hand to Macbeth and ends up dying on her way to the top with him. Both of their desires for high royalty led themselves to death. So, as said lusting for power is very harmful to oneself unless done in a proper way; meaning without anyone getting hurt. The prophecies from the three witches which take place in the woods are what started Macbeth to lose his mind and soon after Lady Macbeth. With the encounter of the witches, they greeted Macbeth as, ââ¬Å"Hail to thee; Thane of Glamis, Thane of Cawdor, and King here-after. â⬠The title he has now is Thane of Glamis, but he doesnââ¬â¢t understand how he could have the title of Thane of Cawdor, when actually Macbeth only led King Duncanââ¬â¢s forces to victory, so considering that the Thane of Cawdor still lives, thereââ¬â¢s no way he can get that title. Being called King here-after definitely got his head pumped up with adrenaline to seek more questions and answers. Soon after the witches vanish, the noblemen of Scotland; Ross and Angus were sent by King Duncan to tell Macbeth of the execution of the Thane of Cawdor and to grant Macbeth of the title. With that said, Macbeth was shocked that the prophecy had come true. So, after one prediction, heââ¬â¢s hoping for another-in which it is to become King of Scotland. With the visit to King Duncan, the King announces that his son Malcolm will be heir to the throne. In Macbethââ¬â¢s mind, all he can think about is murdering the King and all that will come along with it. Macbeth sends a letter to his wife telling of all that has happened and to prepare for the Kingââ¬â¢s visit. In order to keep the murder in her mind she doesnââ¬â¢t want anything to get in her way, so she even goes to the point of seeking evil and not wanting to be a women-afraid of the feminine ways which will interfere in the murder. When Lady Macbeth says, ââ¬Å"Come, you spirits/ That tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, / And fill me, from the crown to the toe, top-full/ Of direst cruelty! Make thick my blood; (I v ll. 44-47) it shows how far Lady Macbeth is willing to go to make sure her husband and herself gets to the top. She even goes to the point to call upon the spirits to unsex her and fill her with cruelty to make sure that here feminine ways donââ¬â¢t cause the plan to go wrong. A huge act of lusting for power taking place which led to a loss of humanity was when the killing of King Duncan actually took place. The way he died was very unfortunate for Scotland but at least he died without torture. Lady Macbethââ¬â¢s plan was to get King Duncanââ¬â¢s guardsmen drunk in which she did. That then led to an open path to walk in and carry out the murder of the King. However, a weakness rose for Lady Macbeth; the resemblance of her father was seen in the King and led her to backtrack. With the guardsmen drunk to a state of sleep, Macbeth then moves in for the kill. He takes the guardsmen sword, goes in and stabs King Duncan in his sleep. With that done, Lady Macbeth puts the sword back with the guardsmen, seeing that Macbeth has been cowardly traumatized of what he had done and cannot return the sword back to the Kingââ¬â¢s guardsmen. The aftermath soon takes place with Macduff soon getting suspicious of Macbeth. Another prophecy is put into Macbethââ¬â¢s mind about when the witches say Banquoââ¬â¢s children will rule while Macbethââ¬â¢s does not. Now, keep in mind that Banquo is like Macbethââ¬â¢s best friend. But, do you think that will stop Macbeth from doing anything worse? No, he doesnââ¬â¢t care about Banquo, as a matter of fact not even anyone; now that he thinks he is unstoppable. Macbeth soon sends his people to kill Banquo and his son Fleance. Banquo is dead, but Fleance manages to escape. With the plan to kill Banquo and Fleance in his mind, he does not say anything to his wife and so that leaves her on her own. When he tells his wife, ââ¬Å"And with thy bloody and invisible hand/ Cancel and tear to pieces that great bond/ Which keeps my pale! â⬠¦ Things bad begun make strong themselves by ill. / So prithee go with me. â⬠(III ii ll. 53-55/60-61) he shows how bad he is really lusting to get to the top. Heââ¬â¢ll even break that bond of good friendship with Banquo to get it. By ill-fated events, Macbeth means that things will be stronger in whatever takes place of those events. The turning point of this whole ordeal is when Macbeth shouldââ¬â¢ve drew the line when deciding that he would murder; slaughter Macduffââ¬â¢s family. He just went over the edge with this plan. In my opinion, Macbeth has just lost it. To go and murder someoneââ¬â¢s family is as if your planning your own death. As Macduff has gone to England and Macbeth is getting suspicious of him, he seeks the killing of the family. You can guarantee retaliation is amongst Macduff when he finds out all this. Another shocking turn of events is when Macbeth learns of Lady Macbethââ¬â¢s death. He had shown little emotion. His lust for power caused him to even care little of the suicidal murder of his Lady. Macbeth ends up dying in the most horrible way. During battle against Malcolm and Macduffââ¬â¢s troops, he ends up getting his head chopped off by Macduff. Macbeth died like a tyran he is. As you can see, Lady Macbeth and Macbeth had this great amount of lust, desire, want, and craving for power. They got everything, but as a result lives have been lost. While Lady Macbeth has her new title as queen, she slowly seems like she isnââ¬â¢t enjoying it, and the reason for that is due to the fact that her guilty conscience followed up on her little by little. She felt like what she did was wrong as in killing King Duncan and lying to everyone. She couldnââ¬â¢t even take it anymore that it caused her to lose her mind and commit suicide. Macbeth, in my opinion throughout this whole play sets him up to die from the start. It was like he wrote his own death. Both these two lost their mind completely, almost un-human like. Overall, as you can see, all the events of trying to gain power caused all these tragic events.

Kindergarten for children is very important. Most parents and children are excited about this stage in life for their child, as well as children might be a scared or nervous. Throughout the year kindergarten children will show a number of new physical skills, some are more important than others to help make her kindergarten year a highly successful learning experience. Kindergarten learns differently, some may learn hands on, or visual. Kindergarten are at the most important stage in life so it is up to the educators to make a difference that can help them in the long so they are able to reach the next grade level as well as overcome any milestones that they may reach throughout their education. First, the classroom is loving, kind, caring, sharing, and motherly to all the children just like my own. The way I envision my classroom is that as you walk in the door you see art and picture of children playing and eating and doing different thing that supports the area such as dramatic play would be children in doctor jackets or something in that nature. The classroom has warm colors around it for each season. Each area of the classroom would be label with such as blocks would be block area, art, dramatic play, water area, science, literacy, etc. The children cubbies are label with their name and picture so they are able to recognize themselves. The library has age appropriate books for the children. The classroom should off the children art and learning. If there is a theme in the classroom the room will represent that specific theme. Each child is at a table that is color coded that will identify each table as a group, each table seats about 3-4 students depending on the class size. Each child has a portfolio so children are able to see their progress throughout the year. The classroom is based on play and material and the children have a teacher child relationship. While planning the curriculum I will provide free play that will allow children their individually time to choose an area of involvement (Eliason, Jenkins 2012). An effective curriculum children should be active and engaged, the goals are clear and shared by all, evidence based, the valued content is learned through investigation, play, and focused, intentional teaching (Eliason, Jenkins 2012). The curriculum builds on prior learning and experiences and is comprehensive and most important benefit the needs of the children (Eliason, Jenkins 2012). Curriculum should be planned around the developmental needs of the children in my classroom (Eliason, Jenkins 2012). Curriculum will builds upon what children already know and are able to do to enable them to connect new concepts and skills. The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) urges that as a teacher my curriculum is thoughtfully planned, challenging, engaging, developmentally appropriate, culturally and linguistically responsive, comprehensive and likely to promote positive outcome for all children (Eliason, Jenkins 2012). While planning the curriculum I will provide free play that will allow children their individually time to choose an area of involvement (Eliason, Jenkins 2012). The experiences should be developed to help the young children in the classroom to help improve their skills in problem solving, thinking, reasoning, and creating (Eliason, Jenkins 2012). The National Association for the Education of Young Children states that high quality, developmentally appropriate programs should be available for all children. A separate statement of the NAEYC divides the concept of appropriateness into two aspects: age appropriateness and individual appropriateness. Philosophies that reflect how I envision my classroom and curriculum are Friedrich Froebel. Friedrich Froebel was a German educator of the nineteenth century who developed an Idealist philosophy of early childhood education. He established kindergarten and education for four and five-year-old children. Kindergarten is now a part of education worldwide. Friedrich Froebel was born in the small town of Oberwiessbach, Germany in 1782. His mother died when he was a baby (Froebel, 2011). His father remarried, but Froebel never liked his stepmother. His feeling of rejection and isolation remained with him for life. This had a strong effect on his theory of early childhood education. He believed the kindergarten teacher should be loving, kind and motherly (Froebel, 2011). Froebel studied at the University of Jena for a short time. In 1805, while studying architecture in Frankfurt, he was persuaded to become a teacher by the model school at Frankfurt. Friedrich Froebel changed the way we think about early childhood education. He designed balls, wooden blocks, tiles, sticks and rings to demonstrate that children learn by playing. Known around the world as the Froebel Gifts , these objects were an important part of his Kindergarten (Froebel, 2011). Froebel also included in his kindergarten philosophy the study and nuture of plants in a garden for stimulating childrenââ¬â¢s interest in nature. He felt it was important for children to grow up in harmony with nature. The Froebel Gifts have been widely imitated and adapted by educators and toys makers. Because of Froebel my classroom will have the right material to that I am able to teach my children with the right material so they can play and learn at the same time. He felt that the teacher should be loving caring and motherly and I feel that I am that way in the classroom as well. ââ¬Å"Treat peoples how you want to be treatedâ⬠and thatââ¬â¢s how I feel as a teacher. Treat other children how I would want my children to be treated. Having that motherly character can also make it easier for a child to be more comfortable in the classroom especially if it the first time being away from the parents. Being that Froebel knew what it was like losing his mother and not liking his stepmother he knew what it was like to feel neglect and isolated so he incorporated that in with teaching and realized that no child should ever feel that way. Froebelââ¬â¢s kindergarten used free play, games, songs, stories, and crafts to stimulate imagination while developing physical and motor skill. In most classrooms free play is welcomed as well as games, stories, songs, and craft that will encourage children motor skills as well as solving problems. The kindergarten program was designed to meet childrenââ¬â¢s needs for physical activity, sensory awareness, creative expression, exploration of ideas and concepts, the pleasure of singing, and the experience of living among others. His educational approach was for ââ¬Å"self-activity,â⬠the idea that allowed the child to be led by his own interests and to freely explore them. Children are more independent and they want to explore new things on their own. Children become aware of numbers early in life, because of daily experience involve various use of numbers. Math is more than learning about numbers and how to add, subtract multiply and divide (Eliason, Jenkins 2012). The National Council for Teachers of Mathematics suggests 10 curriculum standards. The standards provide a guide in mathematics curriculum planning ; content standard are numbers and operation, algebra, geometry, measurements, and data analysis and probability. The process standards are problem solving reasoning and proof, communication, connection and representation (Eliason, Jenkins 2012). The standard gives an overview of math content and process for prekindergarten through the second grade(Eliason, Jenkins 2012). While teaching math to the children I will also incorporate promotes such as blocks, legos, cheerios, etc so that the children are able to see what they are doing visually . At the end of the year children will be able to understands one-to-one correspondence, sorts and classifies objects according to common characteristics, recognize and create patterns. (e.g. red, blue, red, blue or boy, girl, boy, girl), understand simple bar graphs and interpret how they help us gather information, count to 100, identify and print numbers 1-20, identify and draw basic shapes such as rectangle, square, circle and triangle. Reading is a communicative art that involves recognizing and understanding words(Eliason, Jenkins 2012). Children cannot read with understanding and comprehension something they donââ¬â¢t have the background knowledge about. Learning to read takes time, patience, desire, and readiness (Eliason, Jenkins 2012). Kindergarten is a year of discovery in reading and literacy. Child will learn to recognize simple words in print, including his own name and those of his classmates. Letter-sound correspondence, phonemic awareness, sight words recognition, rhyming and words families and concepts about print are the areas in which your child will expand his knowledge this year. By the end of the year some kindergartners will even be reading a little bit. Kindergarten science explores topics that are meaningful to students and can be applied to everyday life. Children will learn about good health habits, including nutrition and an introduction to dental hygiene. Children will spend time learning the process of inquiry as we learn about the five senses. Children will be able to collect information , observation, and data record information while exploring science projects. We will observe outside, take field trips, walks, and be able to talk about what we see. We will explore cause and effect. Science will be integrated into everyday activities including cooking projects Fine Arts are any art form. For example, painting, sculpture, architecture, drawing, or engraving that is considered to have purely aesthetic value (Encarta, 2004). The arts can open the minds of students in ways mere reading and writing will never be able to accomplish. Teaching through arts helps students experience concepts rather than simply discussing or reading it or have it read to them. This approach is consistent with educational theories that highlight the importance of reaching multiple learning styles or intelligences (Jacobs, 1999, p. 2). By working through the arts, instead of about the arts, the studentsââ¬â¢ educational experience will be achieved in a different way than just teaching the standard style of learning. Education of art helps students develop creativity, self-expression, analytical skills, discipline, cross-cultural understandings, and a heightened appreciation for the artsâ⬠and that ââ¬Å"students who develop artistic expression and creative problem solving skills are more like to succeed in school. An activity that I would teach would be fine art such would be painting. Friedrich Froebel, the father of kindergarten, believed that young children should be involved in both making their own art and enjoying the art of others. Children will have a sheet of paper and would be able to pick two different colors out of four. I would allow them to chose if they want to finger paint, or use a paint brush. Once children have made their decision they would be able to self express.. Washington state standard for Art is through dance, music, theatre, and visual arts provide detailed recommendations and guidance for Kââ¬â12 arts education. These documents include: Washington State Kââ¬â12 Arts Learning Standards (one document encompassing all four arts disciplinesââ¬âdance, music, theatre, and visual arts). Another activity would be science. We would see how long it takes an ice cube to melt. The Washington State K-12 Science Standards is a detailed document describing what all students are expected to know and be able to do at each level of our educational system in the area of science. The purpose of these standards is to provide strong support for students, parents, teachers, and the broader community by guiding the alignment of the school curriculum, instruction, and assessment at local and state levels. To accomplish this purpose it is essential to use this document in the following ways: Those responsible for curriculum alignment should refer to this document in selecting or developing instructional materials that enable students to acquire core conceptual knowledge and abilities in science. Those responsible for assessment alignment at the local and state levels should refer to this document in selecting and/or developing assessment tools and rubrics that measure student achievement of the core content in these standards. Those responsible for instructional alignment should refer to this document in designing classroom instruction and professional development of teachers to ensure that achieving these core content standards is a priority. It is also important to point out what the standards. In conclusion early childhood program should provides a safe and nurturing environment, which promotes physical, social, emotional, language and cognitive development will ensure a positive continuation of the childââ¬â¢s education process. Bad communication and father/son relationships Essay
ââ¬Å"Exactly what kind of stupid shit have I gotten myself into this time?â⬠I asked my father. ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t worry, it only gets worse â⬠¦ er â⬠¦ better I mean,â⬠he replied. ââ¬Å"Growing up I invariably figured the two of you knew inherently how to raise us, now I question my ability to survive even my pregnant wifeââ¬â¢s wrath, much less an incessantly crying baby.â⬠ââ¬Å"Funny you feel that way. Your mother and I raised you despite our ignorance and oddly enough I feel no more qualified now than I did more than twenty years ago.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh, thanks for that. You know what? I seriously doubt, based on your uplifting words here, that you truly are more qualified.â⬠ââ¬Å"I love you too son,â⬠said my father. ââ¬Å"Now instead of concerning yourself with the future, start thinking about the here and now and get in there with your wife. Itââ¬â¢s a right of passage and Iââ¬â¢ll be damned if you get to skip out on this one!â⬠Immediately upon conclusion of my not so reassuring conversation with my father I somewhat less than bravely headed back to the room and my once lovely wife now overcome with fear, anger and most importantly rage at seemingly nothing but me. These memories of a day some seven years ago remain vivid in my mind. In fact, itââ¬â¢s amusing what a mind chooses to place into the vault and that which it seems to discard like some Sheik discards used Jaguars. Regardless of what anyone might profess, whatever literature, scripture, propaganda or media might say, childbirth is not, by any means, a beautiful miracle. It is simply a function of biology, and certainly one of natureââ¬â¢s most awful and gut-wrenching sights to behold. Iââ¬â¢ve rarely even for a second understood the parents who weave these intricate tales of how theyââ¬â¢ve never before witnessed a more perfect baby and how eager to hold and caressà ââ¬Å"Johnnyâ⬠they were the minute he breached the birth canal. Let me for a minute explain, for all of the delusional parents and more importantly for those who are easily manipulated by such tales, that childbirth is not remotely akin to the beauty of a bride on a wedding day, picturesque mountains covered with snow or a fantastic waterfall hidden deep in some jungle. It is certainly far more reminiscent of a triage base that exists in any ââ¬Å"X-filesâ⬠like movie where recently captured aliens are carved like the Christmas ham with a bit of grade B teenage horror movie screaming mixed in to accent the not so serene surroundings. When I first witnessed my son, Owen, born into this troubled world, I felt a magnificent burst of love that Christ himself could not have invoked. Seconds later however, when the surprisingly slow neurons had traveled from my all too eager optic nerve to what I like to refer to as myself, my brain, a mere millimeters away, that love remained, capped with something new, shock. Thoughts will race through oneââ¬â¢s mind in this situation: ââ¬Å"Funny, my head isnââ¬â¢t twice as tall as it is wide,â⬠or ââ¬Å"What exactly is that nurse doing stitching up my wife â⬠¦ down there?â⬠Luckily, for my own sanity these were intermingled like morse code within those of concern, fear, excitement and certainly, love. Suffice to say, the first day with my new child was not a picnic, a miracle, a wonderful package from god, the stork or any other freakish analogy that might be told to children and ignorant soon to be parents alike. It was however, the day that my life was drast ically altered and along with the sickness and utter horror witnessed that day, I gained something new, a pride never experienced before. One that seems to multiply exponentially every week like an algorithm gone awry. Most will tell you that children in their early years are an utter handful. Luckily for my wife and myself this was not the case with Owen. In fact, mere weeks after leaving the hospital we were sleeping nearly an entire night, something many families are devoid of for months if not years. Perhaps more importantly however than my now beautiful sonââ¬â¢s penchant for nighttime silence was his daytime demeanor and willingness to learn, in his case siphon, as much knowledge as I could possibly bear to part with. Even before he had grasped a few meager words he was the proverbial hawk watching my every move and taking clues more often than not when least expected. Everà vigilant to the fact that I was under constant surveillance, my at home demeanor abruptly changed from college student/dock-worker to nearly angelic overnight. With ourselves safely on track, my most daunting task was to prevent Owenââ¬â¢s grandfather from one of his favorite past-times: teaching Owen large words in a creepy manner. Imagine my shock upon picking up my son at his grandparents house only to gaze stunned at my boy eagerly rubbing his tiny hands together in an evil manner and repeating over and over ââ¬Å"My plans are coming to fruition.â⬠ââ¬Å"Skip out on this one?â⬠I said to my father. ââ¬Å"If you know of any way I can achieve that at a point like this Iââ¬â¢d love to know.â⬠ââ¬Å"I can think of one way,â⬠Dad replied. ââ¬Å"Close your eyes for a second. I swear to you, if you do, youââ¬â¢ll notice the next thing happening is your child on a bike and that youââ¬â¢ve missed a year, then two.â⬠ââ¬Å"Seriously, I knew you weââ¬â¢re getting a bit long in the tooth, but I never picked you for the nostalgic type. When exactly did you become the card carrying bleeding-heart kind?â⬠Nodding his head playfully with an arrogant hint of understanding that I had yet to grasp he said, ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s exactly what Iââ¬â¢m talking about. Donââ¬â¢t, for anything, miss the years when they havenââ¬â¢t yet figured out how to smart-off.â⬠Much to my dismay, my father was and is more correct than I could have ever imagined. Like a roulette wheel that races around barely fast enough to obscure the numbers, yet not so fast that you canââ¬â¢t with some small degree of difficulty make out whatââ¬â¢s happening, my son was growing up at an alarming rate. His mother and myself, with all of our mistakes now resurrected and at the forefront of our minds, focused on molding our child to withhold the values that we maintained while having the courage to exercise his own individuality. Reminiscing back to the days when being a father terrified me, when instilling a sense of right and wrong in Owen, his mother and I at least attempted to teach him to hold himself with dignity and poise at all times; obeying the rules until they seem to conflict withà some other moral standing. Obviously this wasnââ¬â¢t explained to him in such a manner, but likely through years of examples, lessons at home and luckily at school. Due to the overwhelming maturity and good nature that my son had exhibited up until one fateful spring morning, my shock at that day hopefully is understandable. Owen for the last two years has been attending an esteemed private grade school; one that allows for hardly any deviation from their strict rules and expects as much from the families as the children, generally speaking. Certainly there are more than a few typical suburban gems that consist of a virtually ethereal father who passes in and out of his childrenââ¬â¢s lives between disgustingly profitable business trips only to spend the mandatory 15 minutes with a soccer-mom wife and unappreciated children before jutting off for the afternoon to an overpriced golf course with several other inconsiderate acquaintances. Thankfully for these families an underpaid nanny gives at least some attention to the children, between hangovers and homeopathy classes. While most often their mother prescribes to the theory that two double-skinny-mocha-lattes with nutmeg in an afternoon at the local gourmet food store with her bo-tox friends is the way to raise a child. Owen, sometimes much to his own disgust, is by no means a valued member of one of those families. He is however an important part of ours, one that we can rely upon for at least an insightful thought and usually a couple good laughs a day. Our tendency to be smitten with Owen is something shared by many who have the never-ending joy of his acquaintance. His school however, in accordance with the bureaucracy required by civilization, deems it necessary to establish a punishment doctrine related to something weââ¬â¢ve rarely experienced: bad behavior. This, put simply, is a system of colored cards ranging from yellow through red, with a few shades of orange that only a flamboyant interior designer would recognize, that are ââ¬Å"pulledâ⬠in succession or in the extreme case of some dire transgression, the dreaded ââ¬Å"redâ⬠card is pulled bypassing the usual stepped progression; a bad thing indeed. We prefer to, when Owen has the misfortune of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, liken a yellow card to DEFCON-5. While a red card, though inconceivable, would beà DEFCON-1, or full scale nuclear war (at least within the confines of our modest home). As much as I would like my son to be, at least unt il college, some aberration of goodness, he does stray mildly from the line some refer to as the ââ¬Å"straight and narrow.â⬠But, when these situations do arise, they are typically mild and take the form of forgotten homework or lack of attentiveness in class, never, before this spring, were they of the kind we like to attribute to the ââ¬Å"problemâ⬠children. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve pretty much figured thatââ¬â¢s why you loved me so much, because of my rapier like wit and willingness to dissect even the most noble of your weaknessââ¬â¢,â⬠I said to my father. ââ¬Å"In fact, I know thatââ¬â¢s what draws me to you.â⬠ââ¬Å"I loved you so much because youââ¬â¢re Mother made me,â⬠Dad replied. ââ¬Å"I liked you because you never wrecked my car.â⬠ââ¬Å"Not that you know of I suppose,â⬠winking as I said this. ââ¬Å"It never did come to me though why you failed to ask obvious questions when issues did arise. Care to share any insight on this now?â⬠ââ¬Å"What? And ruin the fun for the two of you, I think not.â⬠Then my father paused for a minute as if in some internal debate that could drastically effect the future of mankind. Oddly enough, a single piece of exactly that was at stake at this precise moment. ââ¬Å"Sometimes,â⬠my father continued; ââ¬Å"the best questions are those left unasked. When I knew that you weââ¬â¢re dealing with any problems in an upstanding manner I felt that my work was accomplished years before. What good is a question then?â⬠My wife called me at the office late in the afternoon minutes before I was leaving and began to share with me the details of Owenââ¬â¢s incident. While I was not by any means eager to hear the news, I begged her to wait at least another hour so that I could consider the full weight of his transgressionà in peace. When I arrived home from work that evening Owenââ¬â¢s pre-trial detainment was in effect and he was found reading meekly in his room. Unaccustomed to this environment I immediately spat a barrage of questions toward my wife, only to hear in return some flabbergasting news. ââ¬Å"Honey, Miss Finn called today about Owenââ¬â¢s behavior,â⬠my wife began. ââ¬Å"Apparently he received a red card and we might need to meet with the principal.â⬠Shocked, I replied. ââ¬Å"Not that I canââ¬â¢t possibly believe that my son would do any wrong, but, Iââ¬â¢m sure he didnââ¬â¢t do it, whatever it is.â⬠ââ¬Å"I wish that weââ¬â¢re true, but Iââ¬â¢ve asked him and he did admit to it, at least we have that much going for us.â⬠ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢ve got to be kidding me,â⬠I continued. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sure heââ¬â¢s heard that before, but I canââ¬â¢t possibly imagine, in school of all places, him ever even considering mouthing a word like shit.â⬠ââ¬Å"Clearly both he and Miss Finn have told me that he said the ââ¬Å"Sâ⬠word. I think we truly have been blessed all of these years and that now the dam has burst.â⬠The worries of my day at work suddenly seemed insignificant compared to this new event. After all, my entire persona had been changed for my child. Though both of us used to have a certain affinity for cursing, that was discarded so many years ago. Iââ¬â¢m by no means like my boy who seems to perpetually pick the correct path, even if heââ¬â¢s only in second grade, but at least in this aspect Iââ¬â¢m largely infallible. Evidently, the crucial issue here is our realization that soon enough he will be surrounded with overwhelming amounts of temptation as he ages. I would prefer to hold on to some semblance of innocence at least through the second grade, hopefully up to the fourth, God willing. The trial was abrupt and to my sonââ¬â¢s credit, he did admit his wrongdoing and professed he was simply angry at the ignorance of his school-mates concerning the blatantly obvious difference between aà water pokeââ¬â¢mon and an air pokeââ¬â¢mon, stating that ââ¬Å"air pokeâ â¬â¢monââ¬â¢s were ââ¬Å"Sâ⬠.â⬠Perhaps heââ¬â¢s been wound up tight lately, given his schedule of 7 hours of school followed by snacks, playing, naps, and more playing. I guess we should have assumed more responsibility in this matter, however, the jury found him mostly at fault and the sentencing was implemented immediately. In the whole scheme of things this episode turned out to be nominally more than a speed-bump on my childââ¬â¢s path to adulthood. In fact, the grounding was short but the continuing education as to how to present himself was intensified drastically. It was only later, during one of those drawn out humid days of summer that my son taught me a lesson that apparently my father, in all of his wisdom, had never learned. As Owen and I watched an afternoon baseball game, each rooting for the other team though having virtually no investment in either, I was stung by the words suddenly emanating from my sonââ¬â¢s mouth. ââ¬Å"Dad, why is it that adults can do and say things that children canââ¬â¢t?â⬠My son said. As I began my blanket argument, searching mentally for something I did or said recently that would invoke such a dreaded question, nothing came to mind. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢ll, lifeââ¬â¢s that way I suppose, someday youââ¬â¢ll understand.â⬠ââ¬Å"Maybe Mom should ground you for the week then and youââ¬â¢ll understand.â⬠ââ¬Å"Perhaps thatââ¬â¢s not such a bad idea, can I borrow your room?â⬠I replied, frantically seeking that slip-up and cursing myself to be more aware around my boy. ââ¬Å"No, you constantly say the colors make you dizzy anyway,â⬠he continued. ââ¬Å"But, when I said the ââ¬Å"Sâ⬠word you told me thatââ¬â¢s not how a gentleman speaks. Arenââ¬â¢t you a gentleman? Or are you a lady?â⬠His snickering bought me precious time to recap the past few minutes and what had transpired, and for the life of me I couldnââ¬â¢t recall any such regression in my ââ¬Å"donââ¬â¢t speak like a sailorâ⬠policy. ââ¬Å"If I did say that I do apologize, however, I think youââ¬â¢re mistaking, perhaps you misunderstood me,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"No sir, you said it, and Iââ¬â¢m telling Mom.â⬠By now my curiosity had been piqued to a point where I could no longer deny this incident in a Clinton-esque manner. I had to pursue this matter, even though I figured at this juncture it meant certain embarrassment, at the time I thought for my child. ââ¬Å"What exactly did I say that you profess you canââ¬â¢t?â⬠ââ¬Å"I told you, you said the ââ¬Å"Sâ⬠word and I canââ¬â¢t repeat it, you said so yourself.â⬠ââ¬Å"I seriously doubt that. Youââ¬â¢ve never heard me say that word. In fact, if I recall correctly youââ¬â¢re the only one in this household who seems to utter that phrase.â⬠I was beginning to worry now that perhaps there was a point of confusion that I didnââ¬â¢t understand. On some deeper level I was also worried that my son had started to ââ¬Å"smart-offâ⬠to me; thus the end to the glory years. ââ¬Å"Maybe you can spell this word for me, so that I know and will never repeat it again,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t think that would be a fruitful thing to do, Dad,â⬠Owen said. ââ¬Å"But since youââ¬â¢re the boss of me, at least until Mom comes home, I will.â⬠My worst fears weââ¬â¢re confirmed at this moment, he had prematurely reached the age of self-awareness and independence. Surly, I thought, this must be some god-awful twisted plan implanted into his brain by my mischievous father. As I prepared for the next daunting step in my life, dealing with an individual who was not simply repeating what he was shown and instructed like a cheap pet-store parrot, but one capable of reasonable logical connections and moreà terrifyingly one that was good at such things, my son began his personal spelling lesson for Daddy. Owen of course began with the letter ââ¬Å"S.â⬠I, on one level had previously assumed the outcome and was coming to terms with the peculiar cleverness of my child, in addition to my inability to see through his weak scam, yet I let him continue. ââ¬Å"t â⬠¦ u â⬠¦ p â⬠¦ i â⬠¦ d.â⬠ââ¬Å"Most importantly, son, you must listen to your children, especially as they grow,â⬠my father said. ââ¬Å"Yeah, yeah, I figured that. I can only assume thatââ¬â¢s why you told me to shut the hell up so often,â⬠I replied. ââ¬Å"I also said distinctly, over and over, to do as I say, not as I do.â⬠In retrospect, these words ring true often to me. I canââ¬â¢t possibly expect to be father of the year anytime soon. I can however learn from my mistakes and hopefully my son in turn will heed his grandfatherââ¬â¢s sage-like advice.
